Public transit safety is usually one of the top concerns when people are looking for alternative ways of commuting. Bus, metrorail and train are one of the safest ways to travel. It has a low crash risk, and also a more secure mode of transport when it comes to crime. Studies suggest that it is ten times safer than traveling by a personal vehicle.
Many riders consider public transit more dangerous and prefer to use their personal vehicles to feel more safe. This fear is based on the nature of public transit and media coverage of incidents. This includes coverage of crashes, derailments, or even crime incidents. However, studies suggest that transit has lower crime rates than personal vehicles. The more congested traffic is, the number of fatalities from accidents increase as well.
Even when driving responsibly, obeying the traffic laws and signs, a person can be a victim of other driver's mistakes.
Public Transit Agencies Strive for Increased Safety
Safety is one of the top concerns of public transit companies. They draft safety plans that include procedures to follow, regulations and also streamline training for the employees and drivers. These companies also track more closely any safety incidents with their systems. They achieve this by providing new vehicles while doing regular maintenance and checks for current vehicles. This and other procedures to make sure their vehicles are up to code.
A study made by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA) submitted evidence that public transit is the safest way to travel; stating that "public transit, such as trains and buses, decreases the chances of an individual being in an accident by more than 90 percent when compared to driving".
Safety is a great reason to switch to public transit. Feeling safer, while avoiding traffic and potentially saving money and time. In addition to being able to do more with that commute time other than just sitting in traffic.
