Despite schools starting summer break, public transit might see more of an increase this year. This is due to a myriad of factors. High gas prices, parking challenges and more people visiting the Washington DC area museums and other attractions. All this and now people are having more confidence to go out and enjoy after 2 years of the pandemic.

With gas prices still being high, more commuters are choosing public transit over using their vehicles. Still, personal vehicles remain the top transportation choice. With the summer break, there are plenty of chances of taking a train instead to visit the Smithsonian parks.

Another challenge is parking. In order to get a good parking, people need to head out earlier than usual. Parking might be even a more affordable option than taking a train when it's a group of people; but it comes with its downsides as well.

Many public transit companies throughout the nation are enticing customers to use public transportation this summer. To visit landmarks, and other commonly visited areas such as parks, malls and stadiums. Some are offering discounts, others are featuring their route stops. Also, highlighting the dreaded summer traffic jam that they could avoid.

Getting Creative

The Metro Mountain Metropolitan Transit in Colorado Springs have come up with a creative idea to encourage students to keep using public transit during the summer break. They created the Summer Haul Pass that allows students 18 and under unlimited rides during the summer break for a low fee. This will allow them to visit parks, venues, and other events in the area.

Summer Break in the DC Area

In the Washington DC area, summertime is filled with many events. From festivals, to sports events and there's always the museums and the National Mall. With very diverse public transit options from train to bikesharing, any location can be easy to get to.

With so many options this summer, make it easier by leaving the car at home, and hopping on the train to do some sightseeing, visit the museums or attend a baseball game, instead of sitting in traffic.
